Here are some of my favorite hymns/songs throughout the years, of course some of the most popular ones are my favorites.
I will try to add all words to the songs as well.
The Old Rugged Cross
This song has been around since 1913. It became a favorite of mine after a special woman sang
it at my grandfathers funeral.
On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, The emblem of suffering and shame; And
I love that old cross where the dearest and best For a world of lost sinners was slain.
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross, Till my trophies at last I lay down; I will
cling to the old rugged cross, And exchange it some day for a crown.
O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world, Has a wondrous attraction for me; For
the dear Lamb of God left His glory above To bear it to dark Calvary.
In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, A wondrous beauty I see, For
’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died, To pardon and sanctify me.
To the old rugged cross I will ever be true; Its shame and reproach gladly bear; Then
He’ll call me some day to my home far away, Where His glory forever I’ll share.
The Warrior is a Child-Twila Paris
When I first joined the church that I presently attend, 17 years ago, me and my best friend
almost sang this song at church one Sunday morning. We practiced for a couple of weeks and she had the courage to tell me
the truth, and I will always be thankful that I did not get up and embarrass myself in front of everyone. She told me that
I couldn't carry a tune to that particular song no matter how much we practiced, so I ended up not singing it with her, another
friend of ours did, but they chose a different song.
Lately I've been winning battles left and right But even winners can get wounded in the
fight People say that I'm amazing, strong beyond my years But they don't see inside of me, I'm hiding all the tears
They don't know that I go running home when I fall down They don't know who picks me up
when no one is around I drop my sword and cry for just a while Deep inside this armour - the warrior is a child.
Unafraid because His armour is the best But even soldiers need a quiet place to rest.
People say that I'm amazing - never face retreat But they don't see the enemies that lay me at His feet.
They don't know that I go running home when I fall down They don't know who picks me up
when no one is around I drop my sword and look up for a smile 'Cause deep inside this armour...
Deep inside this armour... Deep inside this armour... The warrior is a child.
Graverobber-Petra
A friend and neighbor whom I grew up with used to give me a ride to school with her before
I got my drivers license. She played her Petra tape often and I always loved this song. This same friend is also the person
who first invited me to the church that I presently attend. She is currently being treated for skin cancer for the second
time in the past few years. My prayers are with her and her family.
There's a step that we all take alone, an appointment we have with the grave unknown,
like a vapor this life is just waiting to pass, like the flowers that fade, like the withering grass,
But life seems so long and death so complete & the grave an impossible portion to cheat, but there
is One who has been there & still lived to tell, There is One who has been thru both Heaven & Hell,
and the Grave will come up empty handed that day, Jesus will come and steal us away Chorus:
Where is the sting, tell me where is the bite? When the Grave Robber comes like a thief in the night, Where
is the victory, where is the prize? When the Grave Robber comes and death finally dies Many still
mourn, many still weep for those that they love who have fallen asleep, But we have this hope tho our hearts may
still ache, just one shout from above & they all will awake and in the reunion of Joy we will
see, Death will Be swallowed in sweet Victory (CHROUS) When the Lust it'll be is gone , from the dust
will come a song, those asleep will Be awakened, not a one will be forsaken each will wipe away our tears,
He will steal Away our fears there will be no sad tomorrow, there will be no pain, no sorrow (CHORUSx2)
Amazing Grace
This is propably a song that is at the top of almost every Christian's favorite list and seems
to be a funeral favorite as well. It has been around since 1779.
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound,
that saved a wretch like me,
I once was lost, but now I'm found,
was blind, but now I see!
Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
and grace my fears relieved,
how precious did that grace appear
the hour I first believed.
Through many dangers, toils, and snares,
I have already come,
tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promised good to me,
His word my hopes secures,
He will my Shield and Portion be,
as long as life endures.
Yeah, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
and mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
a life of joy and peace.
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine,
But God, Who called me here below,
Shall be forever mine.
When we've been here ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise,
than when we'd first begun.
